Gary Austin is Payer/Provider Transaction Lead for Point-of-Care Partners (POCP). An executive leader with 40–years’ experience across multiple industries, Gary is skilled in the art of corporate, IT and product strategy; program and project management; IT and operational delivery; and business transformation. His healthcare expertise encompasses interoperability, care management, population health, health information exchange, pharmacy management, value-based reimbursement, and digital transformation.
His corporate background crosses healthcare insurance and delivery, financial services, energy, aerospace, event management, and automotive. This broad experience, coupled with a personal background in teaching, endurance athletics, coaching, and excellent facilitation, strategy, and solution architecture skills has made him valuable across a number of different roles including C-level executive, strategic planner, program manager, product manager, and both business and IT consultant. He has been a principal in 3 start-ups, with one IPO, and is Mensa certified.
Gary has worked for a broad spectrum of public and private health plans, healthcare delivery and companies, healthcare technology vendors and healthcare consulting companies across the U.S. and internationally. He was co-chair of the HIMSS Payer Roundtable, an early member of the HIMSS interoperability workgroup, and past coordinator for the NeHC Payer University program. He was also the program director for the industry-leading Mass eHealth MedsInfo project, the first in the nation to transmit real-time Rx data from payers to hospital Emergency Departments, and a founding member of MA-SHARE and the MA eHealth Consortium.
He has spoken at numerous conferences, including HIMSS, National Managed Care Consortium, and was the closing keynote healthcare futurist at Milliman Actuarial’s annual customer executive meeting. He also co-led the first annual HIMSS accountable care symposium in his role as President of Accountable Care Solutions, LLC.
Gary specializes in using a light-hearted approach to gain consensus and developing strong teams that are goal–focused. This approach is especially effective with multi-stakeholder initiatives, in turnarounds, with M&A, and in transformational and early-stage organizations.
His academic background includes an MBA from the top 25 Simon School of Business at the University of Rochester with a dual major in operations management and computer science, a BS in Business/Computer Science from public college top ranked SUNY Geneseo, and teaching credentials in the healthcare management program at Rochester Institute of Technology, where he taught Healthcare Administration. He also has technical degrees from RIT in telecommunications network design and health systems administration, is a Certified Healthcare Consultant from BCBSA, was a certified project manager at SAIC, and led the development of SAIC Healthcare’s Program Management Office solution model.
On a personal level, Gary has been married 35 years, and has a long history as an endurance athlete. He currently resides in Rochester, NY (Summer/Fall) and Las Vegas, NV (Winter/Spring), affording him extensive client travel flexibility.
